![]() This is an exceptionally hard thing for me to post. This is what makes this subliminal chain mail marketing technique different from the marketing that is usually seen in viral TikTok trends (through copying a dance, participating in a challenge, etc.), because this one actively plants an emotion in the brain of the user – without them realising the market value this generates. On February 12 2019, Facebook user Meridy Leeper shared an image purportedly of a drawing by her young child and the following message about suicidal ideation in small children apparently prompted by videos beneath parental radar on YouTube, TikTok, Roblox, and Fortnite - among other platforms: ![]() Because users have been influenced to associate the positives in their lives to the song, this can almost condition their brain into triggering positive emotions when listening to it in the future. The key to this marketing technique is the positive correlation that users will have to the track from now on. Is it subliminal chain mail marketing that has created a placebo effect in TikTok users, who are likely now noticing little victories in their lives that they can associate back to the ‘Better Days’ tune? Probably. ![]() Over two hundred and twenty-seven thousand videos using this sound have been created as a result, in addition to garnering 18.3 million views. Using Kennedy’s song as their TikTok soundtrack, content creators are spreading the chain mail style message that “apparently if you use this sound within five minutes of finding it, everything will work themselves (sic) out”, usually followed by ‘evidence’ that it actually works. The chances of the sound actually holding magical powers is slim, but, either way, this form of promotion is working, and is arguably truly subliminal due to TikTok users not being aware of the ad campaign aspect of the trend that they are willingly spreading.Ī recent example of this is Dermot Kennedy’s ‘Better Days’, a campaign created and launched by Zebr. This is normally in the form of “I played this song over my TikTok video, and within two days I received a promotion at work” or something along those lines. If you frequent TikTok, you might notice a sudden surge in ‘manifestation’ or ‘cosmic interference’ content appearing on your ‘for you’ page. As a result, labels need to get more creative with their marketing techniques if they want to reach a wide audience quickly: enter subliminal chain mail marketing. Now, with the TikTok market becoming oversaturated with music, fewer tunes are making it to the Billboard charts, but are, instead, forming niche subcultures of avid fans. It has aided the success of many Billboard hits, such as ‘Say So’ (Doja Cat) and ‘Old Town Road’ (Lil Nas X). It is no secret that user-generated content (UGC) is an incredible tool for promotion. This is where TikTok campaigns are mastering the new age of subliminal marketing – a healthy blend of prompting of positive emotions, spread by a viral message with the same characteristics as that pesky chain mail that we thought we left behind in the MSN era – with a barely-noticeable marketing aspect along for the ride.Īudiences are consuming in different ways, on different platforms, and at different times – from lean-back passive viewing, to lean-forward on-demand, lean-in social engagement, and lean-through creation. But the great debate: is subliminal messaging still subliminal if the brain recognises it? I.e., now that we have brought your attention to the Amazon smile, is it still a subliminal message? Amazon’s logo, for example, looks like an arrow is connecting the A to the Z, implying that they provide everything you are looking for it also forms a smile, thus an intent to associate happy emotions when thinking of the company. Subliminal messaging in advertisements often take the form of triggering a positive emotion or memory in a subtle way. ![]() This has been a topic of great controversy in the past, especially surrounding the ethics of ‘controlling our minds’, but it is not uncommon for it to be used still take Disney movies and The Simpsons, for example. Now take the idea of subliminal messaging – stay with us here, it will all make sense in a moment when used in a marketing context, this is when an advertiser uses subtle messages in a campaign to affect the audience’s behaviour without them noticing. Did they serve any purpose other than to scare school kids? No. Our millennial readers might recall the days of their first email accounts – back in the nineties and noughties – when their friends would send them chain mail with the threat of some ghoulish creature visiting them in the night if they did not forward the email on to *insert number here* friends.

![]() He’s hungry and looking around for something to eat, but comes up short. The scene pulls back and it’s a guy watching TV. Dwarf begins with a sermon about food from a demented televangelist broadcasting from a biplane, which crashes. In this, I am not alone, as there are probably several thousand other people (99% of them upper age bracket baby boomers) who can also recite Firesign Theatre albums as if they were Shakespeare. In fact, 45 years later, due to the innate musicality of the work, I still have large chunks of it committed to memory. I listened to Dwarf-and the other Firesign Theatre records-as much as I listened to any musical album. I would listen to it over and over again, often with headphones, trying to wrap my 10-year-old mind around it. I instantly became obsessed with that album. Within a matter of days, I convinced my mother to buy me one titled, Don’t Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers. I recognized this name since there were several Firesign Theatre albums selling for $1 each in the comedy cut out section of the local National Record Mart. It made my young brain cells stand up to attention the same way hearing “Space Oddity” had the first time I’d heard that.Īt the end of the show a zany announcer would tell you who you’d been listening to in a rapidly delivered cascade of names: “On tonight’s Comedy Hour, you heard Lenny Bruce, Albert Brooks, Nichols & May, Franklyn Ajaye, Beyond the Fringe, Moms Mabley, Robert Klein, George Carlin, the Conception Corporation, Jonathan Winters, Bob Newhart, Richard Pryor, Phyllis Diller…” etc., etc., and then he listed Firesign Theatre. ![]() If the contestant’s self-diagnosis is incorrect- sorry-they are sent home to die. The first time I listened to that show, they played an excerpt from the first Firesign Theatre record, Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like Him, a section known as “ Beat the Reaper.” This sketch involved a mock game show where contestants are injected with a fatal disease and have to guess what it is from the symptoms to win the life-saving antidote. It came on Sunday nights at 11pm, right after The King Biscuit Flower Hour, at least on the radio station that I heard it on, Pittsburgh’s WDRE 105.5 FM. I discovered the Firesign Theatre when I was a ten-year-old in 1976, via a long forgotten nationally syndicated radio program called The Comedy Hour which was 60 minutes of short bits from comedy records that were interspersed with bursts of radio static, as if the station was being changed between each selection. So if you are someone who has ever benefited from being introduced to something here that you developed an unhealthy obsession for, pay attention to this, won’t you? This is one of the best things, ever. I’ve even had several small record label owners contact me and tell me that they’d put out this or that reissue of an obscure album that we had covered.
